The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo was first held in 2006. It was dedicated not only to comics but also to the entertainment industry that crosses over with comics. It has since grown into Western Canada’s largest expo of it’s kind. The first year saw 3000 visitors come through the doors, year two had over 6500 and this year it is expected to have over 10, 000 people attend. Each year has seen the size of the venue increase along with the numbers and this year, for the first time, it will last for two full days.
Each year the expo has hosted big name guests in both the entertainment and comic industry including; Peter Mayhew, Robert Picardo, Ray Park, Paul Dini, and Gail Simmone. This year is no exception. In attendance will be, George Takei, Kevin Sorbo, Tricia Helfer, Doug Jones, Liana K and Ed The Sock (from “Ed and Red’s Night Party”), Bruce Timm and Mark Waid; plus many, many others.
There is a huge variety of things to do at the show. There will be a live auction featuring an assortment of promotional artwork, photo opps and autograph sessions with the celebrities, a costume contest, and two days filled with assorted gaming. Of course there are also numerous booths selling comics and all manner of comic related merchandise. One thing in particular that I personally missed out on last year, that I definitely will be getting done this time is a Zombie Portrait by Tank. I will find out what I might look like if I ever become one of the undead.
One of Red Deer Digest’s Featured businesses, Amazing Fantasy, is one of the sponsors this year. You can buy advance tickets to the show directly from Dave or from one of the other sponsors; Happy Harbour Comics (Edmonton) or Red Skull Comics (Calgary). Otherwise they will be available at the door. For more information and a complete guest list go to: www.calgaryexpo.com

The 2008 Central Alberta Trades Expo will be held at the Westerner Park, Red Deer on April 12 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free. Students will get the opportunity to experience and explore their employment options for the future. Up to 60 displays will be showing registered trades and designated occupations in Alberta. Experienced tradespeople are going to be in attendance to answer questions. Some skills will be demonstrated and students will be given the chance to try different skills.
The Conference Board of Canada has estimated that there will be a one million trades worker and related occupations shortage within the next 20 years. This shows that the demand for tradespeople will be ongoing. As well as excellent pay and large numbers of available positions, the trades give other career avenues. Workers can gain the skills and knowledge to branch off into other areas, such as contractor, entrepreneur, manager, sales positions, instructor and inspector.
If you are interested in entering an apprenticeship, the Central Alberta Trades Expo is a great primer on what would be required.
