Galaxy Cinemas Red Deer Community Day, Apr. 26 2008

On Saturday April 26th, Galaxy Cinemas will be hosting Red Deer Community Day. Between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. They will be showing eight different movies, admission for all of which will be free. As well, a regular fountain drink and regular popcorn will be only $2.00 each. There will be entertainment for everyone including clowns and face painting.

The following movies will be playing: Bee Movie – 9:00 am, Daddy Day Camp – 9:20 am, The Golden Compass – 9:30 am, Shrek the Third – 9:45 am, The Simpsons Movie – 10:00 am, The Bourne Ultimatum – 10:15 am, The Bucket List – 10:20 am, Rush Hour 3 – 10:30 am.

All proceeds from the event will go to Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation of Canada.

New Galaxy Cinemas in Red Deer is Now Open

The eagerly anticipated Galaxy Cinemas is now open. Located at #357, 37400 Highway 2, Gasoline Alley, just south of Red Deer; the movie theatre opened it’s doors to the public on Friday, March 21. The complex has 10 giant screens, a family entertainment centre, birthday party room, and a huge concession stand which features frozen yogurt along with all of the expected treats.

I went out there in person to check things out (and to watch the movie, “Be Kind, Rewind”) and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I went in and was greeted by the friendly box office staff. Although I skipped buying anything at the concession, I was amazed at how big it was. I did go over to the entertainment centre and had a look at the video games. There are about half a dozen different games to choose from and I couldn’t resist playing a new “Aliens” game as well as “House of the Dead 4″ (both first person shooters).

Then I went in to the main theatre and found a seat. The stadium style seats were extremely comfortable. The screen was huge and slightly rounded and the sound system was excellent. When the movie started I was delighted to note that I was not subjected to any commercials. I noted when I arrived that the parking lot was nearly full, however this particular movie only had about nine viewers; so I presume that the others must have been more popular.

Overall, it was an excellent afternoon at the movies. I will most certainly be going back to Galaxy Cinemas in the future. I have just two small criticisms though. First the games room was a bit too loud. Second when you go into the main theatre, half of the screens are on one side and half are on the other; I was unable to see any signs indicating which ones were on which side. Although, of course, the ushers will be able to point you in the right direction.

The Donut Mill, Gasoline Alley, Red Deer

The Donut Mill is a good place to stop for a coffee or a sandwich if you are traveling past Red Deer on the QE2 Highway. It is located south of Red Deer on Gasoline Alley, just past Glenn’s Family Restaurant. Keep your eyes open for a windmill structure and you can’t miss it.

According to the sign inside the front door, 90% of their food is made fresh on site daily. There are free coffee refills for stay in customers. On hand are fresh donuts, muffins and pastries. They also offer salads, sandwiches, subs, soups, stew and chili. There is enough friendly staff on hand to take care of a rush of customers. Like other donut/ coffee shops, this eatery is set up cafeteria style, so a waitress won’t be coming around to your table. They do have a drive through for those in a rush.

Stop by the Donut Mill next time you are looking for a coffee and a pastry. It is less hectic than the famous coffee chain down the road, and a good spot to read the paper while you enjoy your java. Pick up a coffee card to buy 9 coffees and get the tenth one free. And don’t forget the free refills!

Glenn’s Family Restaurant, Gasoline Alley, Red Deer

Glenn’s Family Restaurant is located on the west side of Gasoline Alley, south of Red Deer on the QE 2 highway. You can easily spot it by looking for the giant teapot shaped sign.
Inside the entrance, you will find loose tea in over 150 varieties. You can pick tea up by the tin, bag or spoonful. There are tea pots and other tea related items here too. From the ever popular Earl Gray to the African Roiboos tea, to green tea, you can find it here in small or large amounts. My favorite is the Cherry Rose Roiboos.

The restaurant itself is always clean, well lit and cozy. The service is reliable, efficient and friendly at Glenn’s Family restaurant. A host or hostess will seat you soon after arriving at a comfy booth or table.
Breakfast is available all day. There are daily specials and a soup of the day, along with the regular items. I can honestly say I have never been disappointed with the food at Glenn’s. If you are traveling through Red Deer, or shopping at Costco and other Gasoline Alley stores, remember that fast food isn’t your only meal option. Stop for a real meal at Glenn’s Family Restaurant.
