Amazing Fantasy is the premier place in Red Deer to go for comics, trade-paperbacks and graphic novels; as well as science fiction novels.

Originally opened in 1980, under the name, Bookworm’s Den; owner Lynn started with just second-hand books. In 1985, she decided to stock comics. It was later sold to a lady named Gerri, then in 1996 current owner Dave took over the store. He has been expanding the amount of comics in stock ever since. In the spring of 2007, he changed the name to Amazing Fantasy ( a name that all Fanboys are very familiar with).

Dave has a vast selection of comics, both new releases as well as back issues. There are several shelves dedicated to trade-paperbacks and graphic novels. Currently the store possesses the largest collection of “previously enjoyed” science-fiction books in central Alberta (he estimates there are approximately 2000+ books on the shelves now and he intends to expand the section even more in the near future). There is also a selection of mystery novels and classic books as well as toys and t-shirts on hand.

Dave knows all of his regulars and greets us by name when we come in. I personally have had a membership file (requested issues of comics and other merchandise will be ordered and held plus the file holder receives a discount) since about December of 1985. He is always looking to expand the number of people who enjoy reading comics; so if you’re new to the <strike>obsession</strike> hobby, he’ll be happy to answer your questions.

So the next time you’re in downtown Red Deer and you’re looking for some comics or some sci-fi books; drop in to Amazing Fantasy and talk to Dave. Tell him Ernie & Tim at Red Deer Digest sent you.

This awesome little shop has been open since 1987 on Ross Street in Downtown Red Deer. Since I first walked in the doors I felt that it was a truly unique collection of kitchen wares, home and garden decor, and more. If you are looking for a unique gift, decorative items for your home or for your garden, or a really good read that you won’t find elsewhere, then this is the place for you. Friendly staff and a wide selection of interesting items to peruse make it a joy to just look around.

The atmosphere in this store is amazing. Once you’ve visited, you’ll want to come back. There is quite the selection of books and greeting cards to browse through. Numerous kitchen tools and cookware items are artfully displayed that beg to go home with you. Owners Paul Harris and Terry Warke have done a great job on the layout and choice of the merchandise, with the help of their ‘Sunworkers’.

My favorite part of the store is the selection of over a hundred hot sauces, which occupy their own little room in the back corner. I’m not daring enough to try the hottest of these; I have only sampled a few so far. There are some chili mixes, barbeque sauces and other seasonings in this section as well as a few cookbooks. I’m sure I’m not the only amateur chef that has stood in that little room examining the goods! You can really spice up your cooking with some specialty hot sauce.

Sunworks is a member of 1% For The Planet. Along with an international alliance of companies, they donate one per cent of their revenues to environmental initiatives. For Sunworks, this means that 1% of yearly revenue is donated to the Red Deer and District Community Foundation’s Environmental Legacy Fund. Sunworks Home and Garden has taken part in this green initiative since 2006, yet another reason to support this excellent shop.

It is on the north side of Ross Street, and parking is available in front as well as in a lot one street south. Stop in and say hi to Paul or Terry from Tim & Ernie at Red Deer Digest.
